Power of Networking
Three weeks in Perth and its captured my attention, nicely surprised by how much I like it here and to be honest it's pulling me in. Happy to report my “no plan, plan” approach to my next season is going well. I feel rested, creativity is flowing and a different kind of energy emerging. That said, I’m still unsure work wise (direction) I’m headed and figure that is A OK too.

Those that know me, know that networking is my jam and won't be surprised that I’ve started to build a network here. Reconnecting with old friends (former Kiwi's) and new connections as I explore this gorgeous city. Whilst here, I appreciate the generosity of my network including those back home in Aotearoa, NZ, whom have reached out and offered to introduce me to their industry and community contacts (thank you). Further demonstrating power of relationships through networking, knows no bounds.
My network has inspired this week’s edition. Reflecting on friendships spanning over 10yrs some even 20yrs. It got me thinking about those who are meant to be in your life, will be. Highlighting that distance can be a factor but doesn’t have to be a barrier to keeping in touch. Change is certain (like death and taxes) and overtime we evolve and encounter different experiences, people, viewpoints that continuously shape us in some way.
During my stay, I’ve managed to visit an organisation (Mining Industry) to explore potential opportunities and build my understanding of Western Australia. Awesome organisation, friendly staff and interesting work they do. When this newsletter is released, I'll be on a flight to Melbourne to spend 6 weeks (total 9wks in Australia), doing much of the same - writing, exploring, connecting and of course networking in Victoria.
I've always said networking is a sport, you got to be in the game! I tapped into this skill, thanks to my time in Wellington (6yrs) from local cafes, to evening events. If there was a gathering I was there. My biggest driver was because I moved to a new city, leaving all that I knew and loved behind in South Auckland. It was a chance to test myself, my resilience, jump out of my comfort zone, embrace change and be open to opportunities and challenges alike. So, putting myself out there and networking was the most logical step. I started to feel the pinch of home sickness and I wanted to connect, make new friends, join a community, be a part of something as I was determined (D.R.I.V.E Framework) to create a life in the Capital.
I'm aware networking isn’t everyone's thing (aka my jam!) either we’re shy, not confident when meeting new people or can't think of anything worse to do with our time and quite happy to not engage or participate in networking forums. I get it, each to their own.
From experience I began to appreciate the power of networking and opportunity to deepen relationships (not all connections are meant to go in this direction) and although at first it could be connection we seek, to belong - having an understanding of our intention will serve us well, when entering new rooms, spaces and places. Sometimes it’s simply “I'm here because I’m curious".
With moving cities from South Auckland to Wellington (2019- 2025). I’ve discovered a new found confidence hence flight across the ditch and open to engage, meet new people and organisations. I put it down to - If you want to know more, you must explore.
Aligning with purpose for my next thing is important and life lately has me thinking about the most important currency being ‘time' each (if fortunate) morning a total of 1,440 minutes (24 hours) is deposited into our daily time capsules.
Taking time to explore, figure things out, ponder my thoughts, sit in my emotions is where I am right now and where time credits are channeled. Laying the foundations of where, with whom and for what reason I'll choose to spend a portion of my allocated minutes moving forward. Right now though, is spent trying to convince this pup Archie to smile for our selfie, as you can see a work in progress, he's not feeling the vibe (D.R.I.V.E framework).
A great reminder that power of networking and relationships can also go beyond humans!
Archie is still not about the selfie life!
Until next time
